１２月１０日、渡邉正人総領事夫妻は、２３日の天皇誕生日に先立ち、公邸に於いて天皇誕生日祝賀レセプションを開催しました。同レセプションには、悪天候にもかかわらず、カリフォルニア州レベル、地域レベルの様々な分野で活躍する米国関係者や在留邦人関係者、領事団等を含む３５０名近い方々にご出席いただきました。
祝賀プログラムでは、アメリカ国内のみならずアジアでも活躍するジャズ音楽家のキース・ウィリアムズ／山田香織ご夫妻に日米両国の国歌を斉唱いただきました。
引き続き、渡邉総領事より、セントラル・バレーやサリナスといった遠方からもお出でいただいたことに感謝するとともに、先般カリフォルニアと日本の市町村で１００組めの姉妹都市・友好都市関係が誕生し、地域レベルでの市民交流がますます強化されていることを共に喜びたい旨述べました。
また、エバン・ロウ州下院議員、ロンドン・ブリード・サンフランシスコ市議会議員よりも挨拶を頂きました。最後に、ダン・リチャード加州高速鉄道局議長の音頭により乾杯が行われました。
会場では美しい生け花が飾られました。また、今年５０周年を迎えた新幹線の展示や、宮城県のＰＲブースが置かれ、来場された方々は新幹線の模型や３Ｄ映像、宮城県産日本酒の試飲などを楽しみました。
Consul General Masato Watanabe hosted a reception at his official residence on December 10th in celebration of the Emperor of Japan’s December 23rd birthday. In spite of bad weather, nearly 350 guests including state and local leaders from various fields, representatives from the local Japanese community, and consular corps members were in attendance. The program began with the American and Japanese national anthems, performed by Mr. Keith Williams & Ms. Kaori Yamada, a jazz pianist and a vocalist with professional careers both in the United States and Asia.
Then Consul General Watanabe welcomed all the guests, some of whom came from as far as the Central Valley and Salinas. He also shared a new development in people-to-people exchange: in November, the City of Millbrae signed a friendship agreement with Hanyu City, marking the historical 100th sister city/ friendship city agreement between California and Japan. After Consul General Watanabe’s speech, State Assemblymember Evan Low and Supervisor London Breed from the City of San Francisco extended their greetings. Lastly, Mr. Dan Richard, Chair of the Board of California High-Speed Rail Authority, offered a toast. Throughout the residence, beautiful Ikebana flower arrangements were displayed. Guests also enjoyed a special display for the Shinkansen, which marked its 50th anniversary this year, as well as Sake tasting at the booth from Miyagi Prefecture.
